To sailors of the 16th and 17th centuries, Phuket was known as 'Junkceylon' or 'Jonkcelaon'; only in relatively modern times did Thailand's largest offshore island acquire its present name 'hill', referring to its mountainous terrain.
The Sea Gypsies or Chao Ley are probably Phuket's oldest inhabitants. While some still live on board their boats in other parts of the Andaman Sea.
The pleasure of Phuket; Now leading international resort, Phuket has a wide range of attractions for visitors. Most are still centered around its renowed beaches: para-sailing, surfing, water-skiiing, deep sea fishing and romantic cruises on chartered boats.
